Meet the Team

  • Graham Houser

    President

Graham Houser is a Rocky Butte enthusiast and enjoys collecting history and stories of the local area.  For the past decade he has been hiking the steep slopes and discovering the uniqueness of this landmark.  He lives at the base of the Butte with his wife and three children and is involved with the Rocky Butte Preservation Society, the Madison South Neighborhood Association and the local Elementary school PTA. He spends his working hours as a Special Education Teacher and is a hobbyist vexillologist with the Portland Flag Association.

  • Matthew Grafton

    Vice President

Matthew has a background in ecological restoration and is going back to school for environmental science at PSU. He is fascinated with Rocky Butte for its beauty juxtaposed with its urban grit. Desire to see it better utilized by the community inspired him to start organizing for the Butte with a group of neighbors in 2020. Since then, he has been very grateful to see the movement grow and be joined by others who share his passion.

  • Daniel Stuart

    Secretary

When Daniel Stuart moved to Portland, he enjoyed riding his bike on single track trails in the surrounding region, but was disappointed that he would have to drive far out of the city to access most of it. Determined to do something about it, he joined the local off road bike stewardship organization, the Northwest Trail Alliance, and has served as a board member there since 2020. Rocky Butte, sitting across the freeway from the already existing bike park at Gateway Green was an untapped gem with the potential to provide more forested trails for recreation in north east Portland and connectivity with existing trails at Gateway Green. He connected with other folks of similar passion for Rocky Butte to found the Friends of Rocky Butte in 2022. Daniel Stuart brings a background in engineering, project management, and data analysis to the FoRB Board.

  • Micheal Ardron

    Treasurer

Michael has been rock climbing in the Portland area since 2017. He has been working with land managers to protect access to climbing areas for the past 5 years. After climbing at Rocky Butte became more popular in 2020 he has been wanting to see the space transformed into public green space that everyone (not just climbers) can enjoy.

  • Hayley Hawes

    Member at Large

Hayley is wild about connectivity in the city – with neighbors, wildlife, landscapes.  She loves creating public engagement opportunities where everyone can be an artist, scientist and steward with a stake in healing our shared habitat.  Hayley regularly “salutes the Butte” with her family and dreams of connecting the green dots here to allow kids, coyotes, camas and caterpillars to cross Sandy Blvd and 82nd en route to our new ancestor urban wilderness.

  • Zachary Lauritzen

    Member at Large

Zachary serves as the 82nd Avenue Coalition Manager at Oregon Walks, an active transportation organization based in Portland. He is a huge fan of 82nd Avenue and all its wonders and opportunities. Among multiple key priorities, he and the 82nd Avenue Coalition want to bring more access to nature and green space, which brings him to this board.
