Activation through Recreation

Friends of Rocky Butte seeks to take existing mature forest land in the heart of Portland (90 acres) that is currently not publicly accessible and open it to the public. The project emphasizes creating recreational opportunities for all: walkers, cyclists, rock climbers, runners, and sightseers.

Our main goal is to provide recreational and public access to the Rocky Butte eastern side by unifying the land under one entity. The land is currently owned by a number of entities: Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon State Parks, and The Grotto. With coordination, Rocky Butte can we developed into a wonderful public asset that gives outdoor recreation opportunities to a part of Portland currently lacking such access.

We believe success will require will the following steps:

  1. Unification of the land parcels under a single entity

  2. Extensive clean up of trash and human waste

  3. Development of trails (see below)

  4. Public activation

  5. Ongoing management
