Welcome to Friends of Rocky Butte!

With lush forest, stunning cliffs, and beautiful vistas, Rocky Butte is teeming with potential! Friends of Rocky Butte aims to secure public access and develop multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and rock climbing to create the outdoor recreation opportunities that Northeast Portland deserves. We are a passionate group of dedicated organizations and individuals who want to open up and develop access to one of urban Portland's largest natural areas.

Rocky Butte is an extinct cinder cone volcano located along the I-205 corridor and the I-84 interchange.

This is an existing natural area with mature tree canopy, basalt cliffs, and woodland trails. With basic trail development, this area would attract hikers, off-road cyclists, and rock climbers.

Northeast Portland lacks proximity to outdoor recreational activities that other parts of the city enjoy. Establishing recreational access to Rocky Butte would create nature access to the diverse and under-served neighborhoods of Parkrose, Sumner, and Madison South.

Currently, the natural area is overgrown by invasive ivy and filled with debris from extensive camping. We hope to better steward the area by promoting recreational foot traffic and creating woodland biodiversity.
